Maternity: When You Leave

When You Leave

Health Fund Information

The Ramsay Hospital Group has contracts with all major health funds, minimising out of pocket expenses for members.

If you are currently covered by single health insurance you are strongly advised to consider transferring to family cover at least three months before your expected date of delivery.

The majority of health funds do not automatically cover your baby if there is a problem requiring neonatal care unless family insurance has been in effect for a minimum of three months.

In order to obtain maximum benefits from your fund after the delivery of baby, we suggest you review your health insurance coverage as soon as possible.

If you elect to remain on single cover and your baby is unwell and requires admission to our special care nursery you will be required to settle the baby’s account on discharge from hospital.

If you are expecting a multiple birth you will definitely need family cover as on single cover only one baby is covered during your stay in hospital.

We will submit all hospital claims to the health fund on your behalf.

You are responsible for sending all Doctor’s fees, Pathology and radiology accounts firstly, to Medicare and then on to your private health fund.

If you are uninsured or have any queries regarding costs please call the Maternity Unit.

Going Home

Discharge planning is a vital component of your stay at Pindara Private Hospital.

The anticipated length of stay following the birth of your baby is:
  • After a normal birth without complications –most mothers and babies are discharged after the fourth night.
  • After a caesarean section birth without complications – most mothers and babies are discharged after the fifth night.

Discharge time is 9.00 am. If discharge is delayed you are welcome to wait in the maternity lounge but your room must be vacated by 9.00 am to allow the room to be serviced.

Please ensure that you have a fully fitted child restraint secured in your car before taking the baby home.  It is recommended that only an authorised fitting station fit any safety restraint.
